COUSINS!!!!

I've got four little nieces that I don't see very often so it's extra special when we are all together at the same time. This happened very recently, as a surprise to my youngest sister who is about to get hitched! We held a bridal shower for her and she had no idea that our far away sister with her two kids in tow would be there as well. It was AWESOME to see her newborn, already almost three months old and to have all of us together. '

I don't take as many photos as I once did, but below are just a few of the most adorable we were able to capture that weekend.

I enjoyed that whole weekend but one of the highlights was meeting Miss Emily for the first time. I'm obsessed with little babies and she was so crazy adorable and squishy. And Leta was so surprised! Look at the tear in her eye!

It was great to see Arya too. She's a busy body just like my kids but at least I got a slight pose from her for a photo!

The four of us sisters went out for dinner in Waterloo together and went bridal party dress shopping. It was nice to catch up and do something together, which we haven't done in years!

Now, to the fun part! First, Gspice created a little house for the kids out of a box on my parents' porch. He cut out a door and window and the girls had so much fun inside. Owen was scared but he did go in for one hot second.

At one point during the bridal shower, Gary went to the park (bless his heart!) with Owen and Arya. He captured an adorable photo and a fun video too! I was getting a little overwhelmed with both boys so it was nice to have just one with me during the party.

Bridge, Drew, Gary and I went on a walk later on and played at a park by the civic center in Strawberry Point. It's crazy to think that we played here as little kids too way back in the day.

Erin and Liza LOVED the swings!

The other highlight? Getting a few cousin photos! We opted to bribe them with mini Reese's. I'd say it worked!

Baby Jack {11 Months!}

Only one more month before Jack turns ONE! (Okay, only a couple of weeks at this point but I swear I wrote this post a full month before his first birthday!) 2015 went by reallllllly fast and so far, so is 2016. I can't believe we're already half way done with February. I'm behind in so many things but life keeps trucking along.

We all got hit with colds this past month which was pretty annoying. Luckily, it was fairly manageable. Now that we have some idea of how to be parents, sicknesses don't seem to be so debilitating anymore. But when I'm working so much, it's a completely different story. You all know I don't have time or energy to do normal things like vacuuming and doing the dishes on any sort of regular schedule. I've said this before and I'll say it again. No one is allowed to come to our house unannounced. You'll have nightmares for weeks if you do. That being said, the boys were down and out for couple of days. Jack had a slight fever and a cough. Luckily, he didn't change the amount he ate or drank too much. Nor did he really show he was sick. Jack was all smiles and playful when he wasn't sleeping. I got lucky when he slept for a solid four hours during naptime!

Jack decided to give us his first words this past month. You'd think it'd be mama with how much I'm working on that one. Sadly, it was not. But what he does say might even be more cute. |

Uh Oh!

Jack Attack knows how to say "Uh Oh!" and uses it appropriately most of the time. How adorable is that?!? He says it in a more soft spoken kind of way which makes it even more cute.

Jack surprised us once again. Crawling began a couple of weeks ago. Apparently he'd been doing it for a few days before I noticed. I swear I only saw army crawling! Going from thinking he would bypass crawling to actually seeing him do it was really cool. I forgot how cute it is to see a wee little one start crawling!

Along with the crawling, Jack is still really mobile. Though he doesn't walk yet, he moves quickly and stands himself up with the help of myself or other objects. I love sitting on the floor with the boys and before I know it, Jack is right there pulling himself up on to me. I love that! Then it gets a bit tough because then I have two boys crawling all over me!

Baby Jack {10 Months}

Jack is ten months old and is as sweet as could be. He is pretty chill and relaxed most of the time and goes with the flow. He eats pretty much anything and even if he doesn't feel too well, Jack is all smiles and plays like normal. It's really interesting to have such a easy going baby. I thought Owen was but my word, no he was not!

The biggest development of the past month................................JACK IS SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't tell you the exact day it happened but it did. The boys started sharing a room on December 13 and it went really well from the get-go. They both fell asleep within minutes and though Jack would wake up at some point in the night for a week or two, Owen didn't care. He'd sometimes wake up but never made a peep or fuss about it. It's been W.O.N.D.E.R.F.U.L. to have two sleeping babies from 7-7:30 p.m. to 7-7:30 a.m.

Baby Jack also got a second top tooth as well. We haven't seen any since but does that stop the nibbling? Of course not. Jack still puts just about anything in his mouth. Thankfully he hasn't gotten his hands on too many books yet. Owen still takes care of those.

Crawling and walking are still nowhere to be seen. I'm convinced though that he'll go straight to walking. He won't figure out how to crawl until later if he ever does. Jack still army crawls with a vengeance and now pulls himself up onto objects - chairs, the couch, ottoman, totes, my legs, you name it.

Baby Jack {9 Months}

This past month went by SO INSANELY FAST, before I knew it, Jack Attack was nine months old. Here I am, already two weeks late. Oh well.

The cute opener I have for this month is that Jack knows how to wiggle. When the music is on, I'll dance a little bit and say "wiggle, wiggle!". Soon enough, little Jack will wiggle too. It's pretty darn adorable. Along with wiggling and clapping, Jack can wave now too! I was so excited about that prospect when I saw my niece wave over a month ago. I've been teaching Jack ever since and it finally paid off!

Nowadays, Jack is pretty mobile. No, there's no crawling or even attempts for crawling which I am extremely thankful for. We are nowhere near ready for that. He's fast enough as it is with the army crawling (or swimming as I call it) that he does. He likes to go off on his own if there are toys to be had but also watch whatever we might be doing. Like if we're in the kitchen, he'll stick around the baby gate until we come back over. I need to catch a photo of that!

Just like his big brother, Jack loves to nibble on just about everything. Nothing is off limits for this little bean. Thankfully, we don't have anything out that is dangerous for him but Owen's toys aren't safe from Jack's little fingers. We often hear Owen say "Mine!" or just grab whatever Jack is playing with. No worries, neither gets that upset. For now... Unfortunately though, Mr. Owen can be a bit aggressive. They both have their share of bumps and bruises so it goes both ways. The joys of brotherhood, I suppose.

Eating and sleeping had been the same up until a week ago so you'll get updates on that later! With the addition of one of his top teeth, I attempted giving him some pieces of banana to work on his pincher grasp but that was a huge fail. He couldn't pick it up but even when I tried putting it in his mouth, he'd swiftly push it right back out. Foreign concepts are tricky!

Baby Jack {8 Months}

Oh my word, I love this little monkey.

I find myself really soaking up all his baby cuteness. One morning while I was feeding him some baby food, my heart pretty much exploded. For a solid 5 minutes, we sat face to face and he gave me the sweetest little grins. His eyes were slightly squinched and there were no gums involved. Just a simple grin. I'd grin, then he'd grin. And every once in awhile when he was especially happy, Jack would lean his head back and give that sweet gummy smile. This might be a case where you needed to be there but believe me, it was life changingly adorable.

Jack is now eight whole months old (how did that happen?!) and is truly one of the sweetest little fellas around. He's pretty content to play but if not, just wants to be a part of whatever is going on. If we're playing with Owen, Jack wants to be right there with us. If we're sitting in the living room, he wants to sit with us. That probably won't last so we'll take it while we can. It does become an issue though when we need to put him down for whatever reason and leave the room or even just tend to Owen. Sometimes he's perfectly fine but more often than not, poor Jack just cries. We do our best to involve him in our activities but when we're changing Owen's diaper, that just isn't possible.

I do suspect teething to be one of the reasons Jack has these issues. I get it, his gums hurt! He still has just the two bottom teeth but I believe the top two will come in soon. Again, I am hopeful this will not include an ear infection. Current standing: Ear Infection - 1, None - 1.

Jack is now an official little swimmer. Crawling will be coming very soon, folks! I'm not even the least bit ready for this but once your wee one starts to swim then army crawl towards their destinations, it's all over. Help me!

We're also working on sleep training! (FINALLY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) We officially stopped feeding him in the middle of the night about three weeks ago and are now working on getting him to fall back asleep on his own when he wakes in the middle of the night. I firmly believe that Jack no longer needs a bottle in the night so one day, I was like, "Gspice, sleep training will start tonight!" Our method is to let Jack cry for 10 minutes then go and give him a paci. We repeat this method until he falls asleep. He wakes up somewhere between 3-5 a.m. and can take approximately 10-40 minutes to fall back asleep. One day we'll get there. One day. Thankfully, Jack has no issues falling asleep when we put him down for the night.

Something else I just randomly thought about and decided to follow through with almost immediately.....the boys will soon share a room! I always had in my mind that they would eventually share a room but that was going to be after Jack was sleeping through the night. And for the past several months we toyed around with moving Jack downstairs but never quite pulled that together. We're busy and don't get much done, let's be real. So, Jack remains with us in our master bedroom and will soon transition over to Owen's room. The thoughts I have now are should we move Jack's crib over to Owen's room so he can get used to the new setup before little bro moves in. We have that travel crib that Jack can use until then but I worry this won't help him sleep through the night. We should test it out first and see how that goes. Hopefully next month I will be detailing how the move went or will soon go!

Jack is also talking quite a bit now. Last week when I was able to take the boys to daycare, he talked the entire way there! I could hear him say "Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba Ba" and then even heard Owen doing the same as he started to mimic Jack. Seriously, how cute is that?

The eating/sleeping/feeding has been going well.We only made one switch to his routine that we shared last month. Instead of feeding him a bottle after his rice cereal and real food at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., we now feed him the bottle first. The only change? He drinks more so win-win! Jack now gets about 28-30 ounces a day instead of 22-26 ounces.

Baby Jack {Seven Months}

Baby Jack is growing like a weed right before our eyes. It still amazes me how quickly squishy newborns become wiggly babies then talking and walking toddlers. I'm doing my very best to try and soak it all up but man it goes by so darn fast.

With how busy I've become, there's literally not a ton of time to devote to loving on my babes. But one of my most favorite things to do is to snuggle or play gently in the early morning hours. Jack is doing better these days and can go through most the night on a moderately consistent basis. However, he might wake up somewhere between 6-7 a.m. and be up for the day. I'll just sneak him in to our bed and snuggle up right next to him. I often get slapped in the face or scratched if I haven't cut his nails in awhile (only because I can't find the clippers!) but I don't care. It's been such a great way to start my day.

Thankfully, Jack is definitely doing better in the sleeping department. We've changed his daily routine a bit which is probably helping but Jack has never been a big drinker. He takes in bottles very slowly and it's not often above 5-6 oz. So when bedtime rolls around and he only wants 4-6 of the 8 oz we prepare, we know he'll wake up at some point to eat. I try to combat that by feeding him the rest a couple of hours later as he's laying there with eyes shut. I don't even pick him up. Is that bad? I've noticed when I do that, he can go until morning. And when I have overnight duties (we switch on and off every other night), I will let him cry it out if he does wake in the night. That's happened a couple of times and he simply falls asleep on his own after awhile.

As for moving him downstairs, we certainly could at this point but I'm having some reservations.
  • Renovation: The space isn't completely finished. While I'd be fine moving him there, that will simply prolong how much longer it will take to complete everything. But let's be real, it's going to take forever regardless.
  • Temperature: We haven't turned on our heat yet because we have space heaters upstairs. If I move him downstairs, I would definitely have to turn it on or at least move the space heater down with him. That wouldn't be so bad. I like it colder when I sleep anyway. Gpsice doesn't so that'd be the problem.
  • Peach Pickles: Peaches goes a little stir crazy sometimes and makes a lot of noise. That would most certainly wake Jack up.
  • Weekend Napping: I was concerned about weekends a little bit too but I found a solution for that. I bought a travel crib for our room that he can use for naps during the day.
Sooooo, should we still move him or not? I can't decide.

I noticed that Jack would be getting another tooth soon a few of weeks ago. It finally popped through last week so Little Mr. now has two! They are slowly making their appearance more noticeable and boy are they cute! I'm happy to report there was no ear infection this time around (YAY!) However, there were a few rough nights in there. Poor guy! He did manage to get a cold a few days ago too and needed to be held constantly after he came home from daycare. Why yes, little one, I will hold you. I looooove to hold Jack. He's such a happy baby.

If you saw the latest video on facebook, you also know that Jack can sit up! I thought I had talked to Gary about this but apparently with how crazy our life is right now, I most definitely did not. Sorry Gspice!!!!!!!!!!!!! He had to see it for the first time with all of you. I'll make it up to you, I promise! Jack isn't showing signs of crawling just yet which is absolutely fine with me. Let's hold off on that for a few more months, yes? K, thanks.

While I haven't been all that great in making the food, Jack has tried a lot of different things so far. Peas, carrots, avocado, broccoli, apples, bananas, sweet potatoes, peaches and green beans. I did end up buying some baby food from Wal-mart, but I tried to limit it to items that I simply didn't want to prepare myself. I also noticed that I wasn't getting the consistency I wanted - it was more towards stage 2 or 3. So until then, I'm fine buying the food. Easy Peasy.

As I mentioned above, we did switch up his daily routine. Jack now follows something like this:

7 am - wake up, 4-5 oz, new food
9 am - nap time
11 am - fruit or veg, rice cereal, 5-6 oz approx 30 minutes later
1 pm - nap time
3 pm - fruit or veg, rice cereal, 5-6 oz approx 30 minute later
5 pm - might take a cat nap though he's starting to transition out of this
7 pm - aim for an 8 oz bottle and bedtime

With teething and the cold, naps haven't been the best nor has he been drinking as much so we aim for this schedule without any sort of expectations.

Begrudgingly, I will admit that we cut Jack's hair on September 19. Gspice was adamant for months that we needed to get it cut. He didn't like how the sides kept getting matted to Jack's face overnight. That's a fair point I suppose.... But his hair was soooo cute! I really struggled with getting it cut but one day we just decided to do it. As the hair stylist started to cut I knew immediately I would regret the decision. I'm honestly still really sad about it. I miss his curls! I finally understand why people get a little crazy about this. I had absolutely no problem cutting Owen's hair when he was younger. He actually looked cuter with it cut. Not that Jack isn't cute now but he just looks so much different. And no, I did not keep any locks for his baby book. Not by style, folks.

Baby Jack {Six Months}

What a fun month it has been! Jack recently turned six months old and is such a lovable rolly polly little guy.

Likes: kicking and squirming about, waking up reallllllly early, snuggling, watching his big brother, listening to people singing and being danced around, talking, making low almost-like-hissing sounds, tracking (& recognizing) our voices and movements and lights, watching everything, giggling, blowing raspberries, sticking out his tongue, grabbing anything and everything in sight, putting things in his mouth

Though we're all still pretty sleep deprived, I do feel like we made a step in the right direction. We finally took away the swaddle a few weeks ago because Jack seemed to do slightly better without it. Though it's still pretty inconsistent, he went one night of waking only once, another only twice, and then of course others a solid three or four times. I'll take the one to two wake ups any day. Sadly, little Mr. also started cutting a tooth this month so there goes any sort of chance for a full night's rest! With our remodel coming to a close, I am anxious to move Jack's crib downstairs. I'm thinking we'll need to buy a partition of some sort to keep the light out of the play-area-turned-nursery. Actually, now that I'm typing this, we might have exactly what we need! We're going to put in a permanent shower curtain rod so we could use the tension rod here instead. Great idea, Vanessa, great idea.

Yes, I did mention above that Jack has his first tooth! His lower left central incisor was the first to come in and it was noticed by complete surprise. I went up to him to cup his face and say, "YOU ARE SO DARN CUTE!" and immediately squealed when I saw it a week ago! I'll admit, I figured one would come pretty soon since he just very recently had an ear infection. Hope he isn't one of those kids that gets an ear infection with every tooth! Yikes!

Another fun development - rolling over both ways! For a few weeks, Jack could only roll from back to tummy...........buuuuutttttt, he can now roll over both ways! I noticed he was rolling both ways on his playmat pretty well just a few days ago but I'm fairly certain he can't figure it out when he's half asleep/frantically crying in the middle of the night. That would be helpful :)

Rice cereal also started this month. More specifically, last week. With how easily he seems to do, I'm guessing he could have started a couple weeks earlier. Oh well. I'm excited to start real food with him but hope to have enough energy and motivation to make it myself. That was so gratifying with Owen and I would love to do that for Jack too. I've got green beans, carrots, and broccoli in our fridge right now so looks like that's what we'll start with this time!

Baby Jack {Five Months!}

Our sweet little peanut is five months old! It's been another INSANELY busy time for us but it didn't seem to fly by unnoticed like June did. Days, weeks and months do go by pretty quickly now but I am so thankful to have two little guys to keep us grounded!

It seems to me that Jack has reached a lot of milestones right around the time that Owen did. It's been fun to read back at Owen's updates and see the similarities! Just like Owen, Jack rolled over this past month! Crazy little guy loves to flip over to his tummy, then immediately wishes to go back but is still unable to do so. Of course, we come to his rescue in a hot second because he's crying up a storm! Unlike Owen, Jack is also able to flip over without using his hands - so at night when he's having trouble falling back asleep, it's often because he's flipped over in his swaddle. Silly guy.

Jack also LOVES to laugh. It is soooo adorable I can hardly stand it. Daycare has said that they don't think there's ever been a baby that giggles so much. It's the best when he giggles at pretty much nothing. I set him in the jumperoo and you'll hear a chuckle every now and again. And the jumperoo - Jack can stay in that for a really long time. He really loves to play with it but it also allows him to look around.

Likes: kicking and squirming about, waking up early, snuggling, watching his big brother, listening to people singing and being danced around, talking (cooing & squealing), tracking (& recognizing) our voices and movements and lights, watching everything, giggling, blowing raspberries, sticking out his tongue

Sleeping through the night is still a major struggle.....for all of us. I've come to realize that sharing a room with an infant is NOT ideal for us. Oh how I wished we had a third bedroom. Any time Jack starts to cry, instead of letting him work on settling himself down like we did with Owen, we always come to his rescue. We've trained him to need us. So now it's time to train him to not need us, don't you think? When our downstairs bathroom/play area is complete, this little peanut is moving down there! Weekend naps might be a little interesting for awhile but I think having Jack in a separate area while sleep training is a good idea.

Baby Jack {Four Months}

I'm not sure where the month of June went. SO MUCH happened in the last four weeks that to me it literally went from May to July. And somehow, my little peanut turned four months! Crazy how life happens :)

Our sweet baby boy is so so so adorable. His little leg lumps are just about too much to handle.These days he's simply getting bigger and bigger, cooing a little bit more each day (loves to talk!), smiles up a storm, and trying his darnedest to turn over. Jack isn't quite there yet but it'll happen any day now! He's even started to giggle a little bit. That may take the cake for cutest thing EVER!

Likes: kicking and squirming about, stretching every morning for 5+ minutes (the absolute cutest thing!), snuggling, watching his big brother, listening to people singing and being danced around, talking (cooing & squealing), tracking our voices and movements and lights, watching everything

Jack is totally Mr. Consistent. Though he got his 2nd and 3rd slight colds this month, he never really wavered in the amount he was eating or sleeping. Much to my chagrin of course. I think little Mr. is quite capable of sleeping through the night but he likes to take 2-3 of his feedings during that time. If we can get him to drink MORE per bottle during the day, I know he could sleep through the night no problem. Our little bugger just doesn't want to do that so the night feedings continue. Sigh (I mean Yawn...)...

Baby Jack {Three Months!}

Our little peanut is officially three months old! Time truly flies when you have a little baby and toddler to consume your life. I wouldn't change it for the world but man it's exhausting! Try to take them both on your own anywhere and it becomes the worst idea of your life! Trust me, it's now happened at least twice; once at the doctor's which you've already read about and the other at a trip to Noodles and Company. Don't even ask. Somehow, I don't even think about how difficult outings are going to be until we're already out and about. Luckily for me, going for walks with the boys is incredibly easy and going to the grocery store is incredibly easy. That is enough for me :)

Jack is still doing remarkably well at daycare. I am constantly surprised with how much he sleeps! I have to keep reminding myself that my children are their own selves and have and will continue to do things differently. But man, I'm pleasantly shocked every single day! 60+ minute naps multiple times a day? Wow. We RARELY saw that with Owen! Though he sleeps well, Jack did end up getting a cold after a week or two at daycare. It's not quite the cold that Owen had but he is pretty congested and developed a productive cough last week. Regardless, I'm pretty sure he's kept up his eating relatively well (Thankfully!!) If he's not, then I anxiously await to see what his new "normal" eating habits are. Gary and I are ready to give up a feeding or two in the middle of the night!

Likes: kicking and squirming about, stretching every morning for 5+ minutes (the absolute cutest thing!), snuggling, watching his big brother, listening to people singing and being danced around, cooing, tracking our voices and movements and lights, being held so he can look over our shoulder, walks with mommy, car rides and daycare.

The first time Jack really took to his brother was during a trip to Walmart. I had decided to finally get out the BinxyBaby that I bought before he was born that's used for grocery carts. It basically allows you to keep most of the space available in the cart by not needing to place a huge carseat in the way. Well, by putting him in this, Jack is quite a bit higher and can actually see and hear his big brother. Big brother can also reach and touch little brother so that was a little difficult but seeing Jack constantly smile up at Owen was the most precious thing I've seen yet. I wish I would have taken a photo!
